    Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Disaster Management


    1. Introduction

    This SOP outlines the procedures and responsibilities for ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors during emergencies and disasters at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 Cantt, Shahjahanpur.

    2. Objectives

    • Ensure the safety and protection of students and staff.
    • Minimize disruption and ensure continuity of education.
    • Establish clear roles and responsibilities during emergencies.
    • Promote a culture of safety and preparedness.

    3. Scope

    Applicable to all students, staff, visitors, and stakeholders of the school.

    4. Preparedness Measures

    4.1. Formation of School Disaster Management Committee (SDMC)

    • Principal (Chairperson)
    • Senior Teacher (Coordinator)
    • Representatives from teaching and non-teaching staff
    • Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) members
    • Student representatives

    4.2. Risk Assessment

    • Conduct regular risk assessments of the school premises.
    • Identify and mitigate potential hazards.

    4.3. Capacity Building

    • Regular training for staff and students on emergency response.
    • Conduct mock drills for various scenarios (fire, earthquake, flood, etc.)

    4.4. Infrastructure Safety

    • Ensure buildings are earthquake-resistant.
    • Regular inspection and maintenance of fire safety equipment.
    • Clear marking of evacuation routes and assembly points.

    5. Response Plan

    5.1. Early Warning System

    • Install and maintain alarm systems for early warning.
    • Regular testing of the alarm system.

    5.2. Evacuation Procedures

    • Clearly defined evacuation routes and assembly points.
    • Evacuation drills conducted twice a year.
    • Designate and train floor wardens and marshals.

    5.3. Communication Plan

    • Establish a communication plan with local emergency services.
    • Maintain an updated contact list of all staff, students, and emergency contacts.
    • Use of public address systems for instructions during emergencies.

    5.4. First Aid and Medical Response

    • Maintain a well-stocked first aid kit.

    6. Roles and Responsibilities

    6.1. Principal

    • Overall in charge of disaster management.
    • Ensure implementation of SOPs and preparedness activities.

    6.2. SDMC Coordinator

    • Coordinate disaster management activities.
    • Liaise with local authorities and emergency services.

    6.3. Teachers

    • Supervise and assist students during drills and emergencies.
    • Ensure classrooms are evacuated safely.

    6.4. Students

    • Participate in drills and follow instructions during emergencies.
    • Assist peers and teachers as needed.

    7. Recovery and Rehabilitation

    7.1. Post-Disaster Evaluation

    • Conduct a post-disaster evaluation to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
    • Document and report on the incident and response actions.

    7.2. Counseling and Support

    • Provide psychological support and counseling for affected students and staff.
    • Facilitate the return to normalcy and resumption of classes.

    8. Review and Update of SOP

    • Regularly review and update the SOP based on new information and feedback from drills and actual incidents.
    • Ensure continuous improvement in preparedness and response strategies.
